In April 2019, the brass ensemble phil Blech Wien joined forces with Olivier Latry to present an extraordinary programme chosen with the aim of bring the tradition of Viennese sound to a wider appreciation through the merging of two sound worlds—realized through the unique arrangements of Mark Gaal. After a hugely successful first performance in the sold-out Kulturpalast Dresden with its new Eule organ, the concert was repeated and recorded a week later in the Great Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna: Olivier Latry on the 6,138-pipe, 81-stop Rieger organ—which he had inaugurated eight years before—and the 17 other musicians create an atmosphere, beauty and power of sound normally associated with large orchestras.

phil Blech Wien is an ensemble formed by musicians from the ranks of the Vienna Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the NDR Radiophilharmonie, the Vienna Volksoper, the Tonkünstler Orchestra, the Hanover State Opera and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. They made their impressive debut with a brilliant performance in the intermission film of the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert 2013. The musicians play rotary valve trumpet, Viennese horn, trombone, tuba and Viennese timpani, and thus provide an unmistakable, harmonious and round Viennese sound. Their first album was released by Deutsche Grammophon and centered around Wagner and Verdi – 2013 being both composers’ anniversary year.

Olivier Latry, titular organist at Notre-Dame, Paris, emeritus organist at the Orchestre National de Montréal, and currently William T. Kemper Artist in Residence at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, is acknowledged as one of the world’s most eminent exponents of his instrument and one of the greatest ambassadors for the organ. A former student of Gaston Litaize, he now teaches at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris and has been honoured with numerous international awards and prizes, including the prize awarded by the Del Duca Foundation (Institut de France-Académie des Beaux-Arts). He has appeared in more than fifty countries and on all five continents, as an ambassador for the organ, as a recitalist or with major orchestras under the direction of renowned conductors.

In addition to engagements as a soloist and in various chamber music formations – including as solo timpanist of the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle – Anton Mittermayr has also been solo timpanist of the Wiener Staatsoper Orchestra and the Wiener Philharmoniker, and is currently professor of percussion at the Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität and senior lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Every year he conducts the opening fanfares at the traditional ball of the Wiener Philharmoniker.

Mark Gaal, bass trombonist of the Wiener Philharmoniker/Wiener Staatsoper Orchestra and tenor trombonist of the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle, is a versatile and sought-after chamber musician. A founding member of phil Blech Wien, a member of Wien-Berlin Brass Quintet and Wiener Posaunen Ensemble.

Das Blechbläserensemble phil Blech Wien schloss sich im April 2019 mit Olivier Latry (Titularorganist Notre Dame, Paris) und unter dem Dirigat Anton Mittermayrs erstmalig zu einem neuen, einzigartigen Klangkörper zusammen. Über ein Jahr lang wurde dabei am Konzept für dieses außergewöhnliche Hörerlebnis gearbeitet: nicht das übliche Gegenüberstellen, sondern das Verschmelzen beider Klangwelten war das erklärte Ziel. Nach dem großen Erfolg der Erstaufführung im ausverkauften Kulturpalast Dresden mit der neuen Eule-Orgel, wurde das Konzert mit den von Posaunist Mark Gaal geschriebenen Arrangements eine Woche später am 25. April 2019 im großen Musikvereinssaal in Wien mitgeschnitten. Olivier Latry an der Rieger Orgel mit ihren 6.138 Pfeifen und die 17 Musiker erzeugen Atmosphäre, Schönheit, sowie Klanggewalten, wie sie sonst nur bei großen Orchestern vorkommen.

phil Blech Wien – Ensemble Mit dem fulminanten Auftritt im Pausenfilm des Neujahrskonzerts 2013 der Wiener Philharmoniker stellten sich die Musikerpersönlichkeiten aus den Reihen der Wiener Philharmoniker, der Staatskapelle Dresden, der NDR Radiophilharmonie, der Volksoper Wien, des Tonkünstler Orchesters, der Staatsoper Hannover sowie des Mozarteum Orchesters Salzburg eindrucksvoll der Musikwelt vor. Die Musiker spielen auf Drehventiltrompete, Wiener Horn, Posaune, Tuba und Wiener Pauke und sorgen so für den unverkennbaren, harmonischen und runden Wiener Klang. Die 2013 bei Deutsche Grammophon erschienene erste CD hatte die damaligen Jahresregenten Wagner und Verdi im Mittelpunkt. phil Blech Wien hat sich in kurzer Zeit einen Namen gemacht und konzertierte außerhalb von Österreich in China, Russland, Frankreich, Deutschland und Ungarn. Der Erfolg des Ensembles liegt im gemeinsamen Ziel, Wiener Blechblas- und Schlagwerktradition nicht nur zu erhalten, sondern ihr auch neue Impulse zu geben. Dies führte zum Beispiel zur Zusammenarbeit mit dem polnischen Startenor Piotr Beczala, den Wiener Sängerknaben und dem Chorus Viennensis auf der erfolgreichen zweiten CD »Weihnachten – Christmas«, die ebenfalls bei Deutsche Grammophon veröffentlicht wurde.

Olivier Latry – Organist Der Titularorganist an der Notre-Dame in Paris und emeritierter Organist am Orchestre National de Montréal tritt an den renommiertesten Veranstaltungshäusern der Welt auf, ist Gast führender Orchester unter berühmten Dirigenten, nimmt für Major Labels auf und kann eine beeindruckende Anzahl von Uraufführungen für sich verbuchen. Der ehemalige Student von Gaston Litaizes unterrichtet heute am Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris und wurde weltweit mit zahlreichen internationalen Auszeichnungen und Preisen geehrt, unter anderem mit dem Del Duca Preis (Institut de France-Académie des Beaux) 2000. 2010 erhielt er einen Ehrendoktor der McGill University in Montreal, Kanada. Als weltweit führender Botschafter für sein Instrument war er Organist-in Residence an der neuen Eule-Orgel im Kulturpalast Dresden in der Konzertsaison 2017/18 und von 2019 bis 2022 ist er William T. Kemper Artist-in-Residence an der University of Kansas in Lawrence.
